The prayer that works is the prayer connected to scriptures and derived by the spirit. Outside of the ministry of the Word and the Spirit, prayer does not work.
Prayer is based on what God has said; Your first assignment in praying effectively is to find scriptures that relate to what you want and make them the basis of your defence and petition.
